Has anyone spent more time in the barrel than Mikala Jones?

Growing up at Rocky Rights gave him a massive head start, also considering the other playgrounds in the neighborhood. Tube riding for many was the benchmark of the era. Would you take the drop? Could you make the barrel? As free surfers started to make their impression on the industry, Mikala spent his formative years on the road with The Search, which spawned a yearning for searching.

The following years were filled with lengthy visits to the most remote nooks and crannies of Asia. Going feral. Free surfing. Getting barreled. This passion and connection with the region ultimately gave way to taking up a second residence and starting a family in the barrel rich archipelago of Southeast Asia.

With a relatively quiet demeanor, Mikala lets his performances do the talking. Casually pioneering today’s most prominent imagery advancement, he was on the forefront of the POV photography movement more than a decade before GoPro. With a surf photographer for a father and so much time spent in remote locations with perfect barrels there was plenty of opportunity to work on images. New angles from inside the tube were his preference; every one of them was explored. 25-pound SLR film camera housings weren’t easy to wrangle, but he found a way to do it in his new Indonesian stomping grounds.

Mikala’s life has only been made easier in recent years with the release of the GoPro. The company quickly partnered up with him to create some of their most compelling imagery and mounts. Considering the benefits of these new cameras, Mikala is content to use them to his advantage and continue documenting life in the tube; the sweetest juice surfing has to offer.
