If we were to compare surfing styles to music genres, Craig Anderson is jazz.
Minimalistic and smooth in the interim moments. Explosive and expressive on the high notes. His airs are non-telegraphed like a Miles Davis solo; cruising along nonchalantly, he soars spontaneously. His straight airs are graceful. His pirouettes are poetry. Craig’s surfing never looks strenuous or out of rhythm, a mix of old school flow and rifts of new age flair. Craig surfs like jazz. That’s what we love most about him.
Not constrained by contests and the three to the beach mindset, Craig Anderson experiments on a wide assortment of designs by Hayden Shapes. His love of single fins, twins, and thrusters is fun for us as we too like to dig on alternative crafts and nostalgic throwbacks.
We often find ourselves invigorated by Craig Anderson’s free spirit, wishing we could join him as he travels around the world in pursuit of swell and fun.
But sometimes, we are content just to watch the footage he comes back with. Like the time Craig tracked the swell of the century to Kandui, Indonesia.
Instead of being sane and riding a semi-gun, Craig rode his signature board, a 5’4 Hypo Krypto with his signature Ando fins. The web clip of his escapade entitled, “Welcome Elsewhere” is made more impressive when one considers that his Ride Number is 9.8. How Craig scratched into those electric blue freight trains, let alone maintain control at those speeds is baffling. (watch here)
Defying logic often opens new doors and with each new opportunity we continue to progress. It has been an honor making fins for Craig Anderson and a pleasure to watch him surf so effortlessly on them.
