Possessing the smoothest style amongst the Brazilian Storm, Miguel Pupo reminds us of a new age Rob Machado; blending languid lines with lofty tail high aerials.
A second-generation professional surfer, Miggy clearly benefits from the strategic wisdom and beautifully crafted surfboards imparted on him by his father Wagner. And, in true family style, his younger brother Sammy is nipping at his heals, contributing to the Pupo family legacy with a professional career of his own.
Joining the Championship Tour in 2011 alongside good friend Gabriel Medina, Miguel is part of an inspired Brazilian movement in surfing. At every event, he supports his compatriots to the very end; competing alongside the Brazilian Storm with an omnipresent smile and a deep appreciation for the life he gets to live.
While his whipping backhand is his moneymaker, Miguel’s silky forehand barrel style inspires us the most. At heavy locales such as Pipeline and Cloudbreak, Miguel’s style has been compared to Gerry Lopez for the way he casually negotiates the most critical part of the wave. Quite a recognition for a young surfer once know almost entirely for his infallible air game.
