The list is short of people who have gotten as barreled as Reef Mcintosh has at Pipeline.

One of the head shoguns on the North Shore of Oahu, it is literally in Reef’s job description to post up all winter long in Hawaii, and show the best pros in the world how it’s done.

Reef Mcintosh

As an invitee and competitor of the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational, Reef’s in the upper echelons of the big wave elite. When swell maps turn purple, there are a core group of guys who want to dance with those hollow demons. Reef is always amongst the pack pushing the bar of what is possible.

During a historic swell that slammed Fiji, Reef charged the biggest waves to ever thunder through CloudBreak. His description of the freight trains roaring down the coral reef, just mere feet below, was especially ominous.

“When a wave of that size rips through, it brings up the worst smell of fish and seaweed.”

He went on in an interview,

“It grated up the bottom of the ocean. The fish were getting ground up down there.”

Even when the ocean’s inhabitants are getting worked, Reef is never one to back down from a challenge. His trademark, casual style coupled with his technical relationship with the heaviest waves is what we love most about him. He isn’t content just to ride a wave of terrifying magnitude, but actually positions himself deep as possible so that he can fight his way out of the belly of the beast. We love Reef’s determination to ride the most dangerous waves on the planet and are in full support of his aspirations to do so.
